Creative Foods Cake Decorating

March 16, 2012 2 Comments

Students made and decorated their own cakes this week.  It was fun to have a little bookwork each day with a lab activity attached.

Tuesday, students made sheet cakes.  They made a single cake recipe and baked it in a bar pan.  This made the cakes only 1″ thick.  They set the cakes aside to cool overnight.

Wednesday, students used cookie cutters to cut their sheet cakes into small layers.  Each student was able to cut two layers of a 5″ cake.  They frosted the layers together and added a crumb coat.  They chilled the cake overnight for the crumb coat to harden.

Thursday, students decorated the cakes.  They used a writing tip and star tip.  They shared food coloring and tips to have a great color variety.

The cakes were judged on appearance on Friday.  We invited all classrooms to come and visit and were nearly overwhelmed with over 200 guests!  We gave each guest a cake ball after casting their ballot.

Cake balls are made by mixing cake crumbs and frosting.  It was a great way to use up our extras. (And bribe students :))

Students were divided into groups including:

  • Make the cake balls
  • Organize cakes and labels
  • Decorate
  • Host
  • Create voting system

Here’s our trusty hospitality team!

It was really great to see the students so proud of their individual cakes.  They enjoyed having their friends visit.  I enjoyed having so many potential FCS students come through the classroom.

Winners are to be determined, but here are some favorites:
