Heat Transfer Methods Scavenger Hunt | Family and Consumer Sciences Lesson Plan

While my students were waiting for their Rice-And-Roni Heat Transfer Method Demonstration to cook, we had a heat transfer method scavenger hunt.

First, I wrote three columns on the board: Conduction, Convection, Radiation.

I gave students a variety of cookbooks and magazines and told them to browse through recipes and find a recipe for each kind of heat transfer. They were to write the title of the recipe and the “hint” that told them the transfer method. I wrote the example above: “Butternut Squash Basmati Rice: BOIL.”

Magazines and books are the best source for these recipes because it would be too easy for them to just search for something “grilled” or “boiled.” Browsing magazines is fun and requires them to analyze each recipe.

Each group was told to find an example for each category and to write it in the correct column. As you can see, giving the groups different marker colors made it easy to see which groups were finished and which were struggling.

We don’t often get a chance to just browse our magazines so the students really enjoyed this activity. The Rice-and-Roni to eat afterwards made it all the more fun.
